| the rest of my life. I switched to Computer Information Systems Technology and chose the path to become an Oracle database programmer. I was able to learn a variety of skills and take a lot of computer and business related classes. In the mean time, I had started a side business to earn some extra money. I started to learn how to build websites and market them for the search engines, which became a great skill after graduation. Building and marketing websites was exciting to mean because of my business, I already had a web design portfolio, as well as web development and real-world online marketing skills. I wanted to be able to work with people and to help businesses make their online presence more successful. After graduation in 2001, I took my first job as a developer and online marketer for a Chevrolet dealership in Indianapolis. My main focus was to develop a platform for Chevrolet dealerships to be able to pull their vehicle inventory to display on their website. Back then, there were few companies offering this functionality. My boss and I were successful, and while we signed on new dealerships to use our platform, we moved our dealership to the top of the search engines rankings. I learned a lot at this job, but there wasn’t any room for advancement, so I moved on to my second job.
My second job taught me a lot, to put it lightly. I went from being the webmaster to the marketing manager to the e-commerce manager all in a span of about 4 and 1/2 years. ThisĀ company did extensive online and offline direct marketing in the highly competitive satellite TV and consumer electronics market. I was always wearing a lot of hats and did everything from print planning to PHP development to electronics buying. My main focus was always the web, because that is what I love. We were able to become one of the top satellite TV retailers on the web within my first year at the company and continued to grow in to a successful, online ecommerce retailer.
In the end, I decided that I was ready to own my own business. I have a lot to offer a company who just doesn’t know how to drive more traffic to their website, through paid search, social media marketing, email marketing and search engine optimization. To this day, I still get excited logging in to a statistical program and seeing that a website is gaining speed in the search engines. Hearing my customers say, “I just blogged. I’m a blogger! ” and introducing them to the new technologies in the online marketing space is very rewarding and I hope I can continue to help businesses in the years to come. If nothing else, I am sure there is an old computer tower laying around that I can dismantle.
